Edward Dodwell (1767-1832) was an Irish painter, traveller, and writer on archeology. These volumes offer a vivid account of his travels throughout Greece in the years 1801, 1805, and 1806. Dodwell's object was to provide an accurate description of Greece, delving into its ancient history while also exploring the state of the country at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Alongside the artist and archeologist William Gell, Dodwell toured the Ionian Islands and the Troad. Later he travelled with the Italian artist Simone Pomardi; the illustrations come largely from their copious sketches.
A gift to the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, from Homer Thompson. Thompson (1906-2000) was a Canadian classical archaeologist who specialized in ancient Greece. As a fellow of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, he was part of the excavations of the Athenian Agora beginning in 1931, leading them from 1946 until 1970.
