A very good first edition set of Winston Churchill's four-volume history of Britain and its former colonies and possessions around the world, all housed in handsome bindings from Bayntun (Riviere) Bindery of Bath, England.

Churchill began work on this history in 1937; war and then the writing of several other works delayed its completion, so that it was not until the mid-1950s, when Churchill was in his early eighties, that he was able to finish his work.  The four volumes cover the period from Caesar's invasions of Britain (55 BC) to the end of the Second Boer War (1902).  The books were bestsellers and generally well reviewed thanks to their narrative power as well as the fame of their author.

Of interest also is the provenance.  The bookplates on the front pastedowns come from Cragwood, the Far Hills (NJ) estate that was home to Charles W. Englehard Jr. and his wife Jane.  Jane Engelhard (1917-2004) was an American philanthropist and arts patron, and it is from her estate that this book comes.

First edition, per the publisher's information.
