A LOVING LIKENESS; AMERICAN FOLK PORTRAITS OF THE 19TH CENTURY - 1992
A Loving Likeness: American Folk Portraits of the Nineteenth Century
text by Marna Anderson
The Revolutionary War saw the emergence in America of folk portraiture, made by non-academic painters, originating from the middle-class. This catalog gathers works of a specific period in American folk art, from 1820 to 1845, most of them being likenesses from various people who were often drawn to the artist by the local newspaper advertisements. Each collection of paintings is conveniently documented with a short biography of the artist and captions for each illustration. 60 pages. 9 x 11.5 inches.
Numerous illustrations. Color reproductions of works. Each illustration captioned. Introduction and bibliography included. Biographical notes for each artist.
