A copy of the book-length edition of Colonel Ethan Allen's autobiographical account of his experience as a prisoner of war during the American War for Independence.  First published in 1779 in Philadelphia as a "large and ragged pamphlet" in the words of the publishers of this expanded (and one suggests improved) edition, this autobiographical account is a colorful narrative of military episodes during the war.  Ethan Allen (1738-1789), called the hero of Ticonderoga, wrote accounts of his exploits in the war that were widely read in the 19th century.

Modern russet cloth over boards protects the sheets.  Text block exhibits softening at margins with closed tears and some chips resulting in loss of text at pages vii and xi.  Pocket sized format suggests publication for a popular market.  Outside of institutional libraries, copies are scarce.

First published by Robert Bell in Philadelphia, 1779.  According to Gilman's Bibliography of Vermont, the present edition is the sixth.  Sabin no. 796. (U. Wisconsin Library)
