A complete, and overall Very Good copy of this scarce work on artillery and fortifications by one of Napoleon's former generals, written from exile in the United States.  Two volumes, in contemporary half calf.  Interior text block shows general staining and foxing, though without harming legibility.  The seventeen multi-section foldout plates are clear, with scattered light foxing and some staining to creases and margins.

As Henri Lallemand (1777-1823) was living in the United States when he wrote his Treatise on Artillery, it was published only in this English translation, which War Secretary John C. Calhoun helped him publish in 1820. The following year the US army adopted the treatise as its standard manual. [Shannon Selin.com, Imagining the Bounds of History]

The spine foot is stamped "Wash. Hood, Lieut. U.S.A.," suggesting an interesting provenance.  Washington Hood (1808-1840), born in Philadelphia, was an 1827 graduate of the USMA at West Point.  He was a surveyor with the U.S. Army Corps of Topographical Engineers, best known for working with fellow officer Robert E. Lee to map the border between the state of Ohio and Michigan Territory in 1835.
