First English translation of the military engineering work by pioneer mathematician, physicist, and politician Lazare Nicolas Marguerite Carnot, a leader in the French revolutionary army.  Carnot's treatise on defense drew from examples in both ancient and modern history, and it was integral to Napoleon's army's strategy.  The translator, a French nobleman serving in the British Army, with an English-speaking audience in mind, abridged the original somewhat.

A handsome three-quarter leather binding, with Napoleonic ornaments - crowns, laurel wreaths, 'N' - decorating the spine.

Printed in London by C. Rowarth, Bell-yard, Temple-Bar.
