Animal Style in South Russia and China

Princeton Monographs in Art and Archaeology XIV

by Michael Rostovtzeff

Princeton, NJ:  Princeton University Press, 1929

Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD condition, with a GOOD DJ and slipcase.

  • Copen blue paper covers/wraps are mostly clean, with gilt medallion to top board and navy cloth spine strip.  Corners are sharp.  See photos.
  • Spine has gilt text and is bright with firm ends.
  • Binding is secure, beginning to crack at page 112.  See photos.
  • End papers/ pastedowns show a little foxing and toning.
  • Illustrations, 33 black and white photographic plates, are bright and clear.
  • Interior is gently age-toned, exhibits some marginal toning, scattered staining at gutter.  See photos.
  • Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
  • Text block edges have publisher's red ink at head, some foxing to fore and foot edges.
  • Plain copen blue DJ has some edgewear, chipped corners, bumping along edges, staining and exposure generally.
  • Slip case of copen blue paper over thin boards is intact, shows exposure and some cracking at seams.
  • PS2025.0417

112 pages, 33 plates. 8 x 10.5 inches

A Very Good copy, scarce in the publisher's dust jacket and slip case, of this number in the Princeton Monographs in Art and Archaeology series.  Some signs of cracking at the binding and some staining in the margins, but very few signs of handling and unmarked.

Michael Rostovtzeff (1870-1952) was Professor of Ancient History and Archaeology at Yale University in 1925 when he was invited to Princeton to deliver the lectures that make up this book.  Under the auspices of the Harvard-Princeton Fine Arts Club, Professor Rostovtzeff gave a course of lectures to graduate students on the subject of the animal style as found on objects in South Russia and China.

Printed in France by Bishop and Garrett.
