Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD condition, with a VERY GOOD DJ.

• Purple cloth covers with gilt title. 
• Boards show some exposure, edgewear.  Corners are scuffed, with exposed board.  See photos.  
• Spine has gilt text and is bright with crushed ends, a small chip at shoulder.  See photos.  
• Binding is strong. 
• End papers/ pastedowns show little to no sign of age or wear.
• Interior is gently age-toned.  Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
• Text block edges have ink at head, untrimmed fore edges. 
• DJ looks great behind Mylar and is backed with archival paper.
• Close examination of DJ reveals light edgewear including possible bumps, rubbing, staining to back, and/or tiny closed tears.  See photos.

William Russell (1915-2000) was a clerk at the American Embassy in Berlin when war began in Europe.  Writing mostly from his personal observations, and about the ordinary German people he encountered in his daily life, Russell's memoir captures the period from late Summer 1939 to Spring 1940.
