Edward Bellamy (1850-1898), of Chicopee Massachusetts, was an American author, journalist, and political activist. Bellamy is most famous for his utopian science fiction novel Looking Backward, a huge best-seller in 1888 and inspiration for the formation of Nationalist Clubs around the country. Equality, which takes up the thorny questions of feminism and female reproductive rights, is a kind of sequel to Looking Backward.
