Volume 1 (Tome premier) of a two volume set dedicated to marine life of the ocean and English Channel by the French painter, ceramist, engraver, and etcher Mathurin Méheut (1882-1958).  Thick boards with gray-green cloth and titles in white ink; the spine is partially peeled away, as in other examples.  Overall Very Good Minus condition due to boards and binding.  Interior is tanned, more at the margins, with the 22 color plates vivid and bright.  Many black and white illustrations are integrated into the text throughout.  A very good copy of a rare book often found in deplorable condition.

Étude de la Mare is an extraordinary work.  From 1910 to 1912, Méheut collaborated with naturalists at the Roscoff marine biology station to depict marine life, and the drawings and studies he produced untimately became this book.  As the Preface by M. Yves Delage enthuses, Méheut produced a book on the sea that is not the dry output of a naturalist ignorant of artistic concerns, nor an artistic fantasy unmoored from biology!  It is both artistically beautiful and scientifically correct.

Nouvelle Édition, produced in Paris and sold at the Librairie Central des Beaux-Arts.
