First American Edition of this manual for the American farmer. AS IS condition, with front cover almost completely detached and loose opening pages. Leatherbound boards. Interior is toned, very legible. Illustrations in text, plus full-page plates in black and white, and two colored plates showing fruit crops.
According to the title page, this volume was intended as "a practical work, devoted to Agriculture and Mechanics, Fruit-Growing and Gardening, Live-Stock, Business Principles, Home Life, and Showing how to make money, preserve health and secure happiness on the Farm." Included in the illustrations are many of the agricultural machines that came into use in the late 19th century.
Inscribed on the end paper "Carl Krause, Liverpool Ohio, R.F.D. No. 2." Carl Krause (1860-1922) lived and farmed in Liverpool Township, Medina, Ohio, between Cleveland and Akron.
Copyright by John E. Read 1880. An edition dated 1880 was published by Bradley, Garretson in Brantford, Ontario. The 1881 American edition was published by J.C. McCurdy & Company, in Philadelphia and also Cincinnati, Chicago, and St. Louis.
