Large paper edition, four volumes.  Boston and New York:  Houghton Mifflin Company, 1906  

Hardback set is overall in VERY GOOD condition.

  • Three-quarter leatherbound covers with marble paper panels and gilt ruling. 
  • Boards show some wear, smudges, edgewear.  Corners are scuffed, with exposed board.  See photos.
  • Spines have raised bands, gilt text and borders, and are bright with scuffing at ends.
  • Bindings are strong.  
  • Marble end papers/ pastedowns show little sign of age or wear.  
  • Frontispieces are present in two states in each volume; uncolored plates have intact tissue guards.
  • Illustrations are bright and clear.  
  • Interiors are gently age-toned, exhibit marginal toning, scattered foxing.  See photos. 
  • Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks. 
  • Text block edges have deckle fore and foot edges, gilt along head, have some foxing at fore edge.

A handsome copy of Goethe's Faust, in the English translation by Bayard Taylor.  Complete in four volumes, this is number 542 of 650 copies of the Large Paper Edition, with all four frontispieces in two states -- hand-colored and black and white.  Bound by the Riverside Press in three-quarter dark brown morocco with marble paper and gilt titles and ruling, pastedowns and end papers to match.  Interior is toned, with some scattered foxing and staining at gutter edges.  

Limited edition of 650 copies, of which this is #542.  Printed at the Riverside Press during the tenure of Bruce Rogers.
