This volume comprises an early history of the War of 1812, the first military challenge to the United States as a young nation. Modestly, the author referred to his work as "historical sketches," to which were added "anecdotes, illustrative of the individual bravery of the American sailors, soldiers & citizens; embellished with portraits of the most distinguished Naval & Military Officers; and accompanied by Views of several sieges and engagements." The extensive list of locations where further editions were issued suggests the wide extent of interest in the subject.
Inscribed on the title page: "Lightner Henderson His Book April 26, 1818," with Henderson's signature also on feps front and back.
