Norwich University, founded in 1819, was the first private military college in the United States.  Here the idea of the “citizen soldier” was developed, a guiding philosophy that later became the impetus for the creation of the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC), of which Norwich University was the birthplace.

The front pastedown of each volume is inscribed "Stanley C. Wilson, Chelsea Vt., Presented by vote of Trustees of Norwich Uniersity Aug. 14, 1915, being at the first meeting of Trustees attended by me."  Wilson (1879-1967), native of Orange Vt., was a lawyer and politician active in the Vermont Republican Party.  He would go on to be Governor of Vermont from 1931-1935.
