A very good copy of this Souvenir Edition of the Salem (Massachusetts) Evening News, issued in 1897.  Richly illustrated with photographs of landmarks and prominent citizens, it offers the reader a historical sketch, brief biographies of notable citizens, and descriptions of landmarks and institutions.  With advertisements at the back.

An interesting provenance.  The book is twice inscribed:  first, "Compliments of Wm. Penn Hussey," in fine copperplate script.  William Penn Hussey (1847-1910) made his fortune in the coal business.  Builder of the Riverbank mansion in Danversport, Hussey is also the subject of an equestrian statue nearby.  The second inscription is by Hussey's wife, Sallie Munroe Hussey, the only daughter of a Martha's Vineyard millionaire.  First, she added a "Mrs." to the initial inscription, in red ink.  Then, on another end paper she wrote, still in red, "Mrs Myra Stetson Shaw from Sallie Munroe Hussey, Jan. 22, 1908."

First edition of 5000 copies, as per the title page.
