James Gillespie Blaine (1830-1893) was a Republican who served as speaker of the House and as a senator. He also served as secretary of state under three different presidents--one of only two people to do so. He ran for president and was narrowly defeated by Grover Cleveland.

Hardback is overall in GOOD condition.- Beautifully bound in golden brown cloth with elaborate decoration with black ink, gilt and tooling.
- Covers show light bumping and scuffing to corners, general light edgewear and some soiling.
- Back cover is blue with printed gilt signature.
- Scuff to front pastedown and small chip off top right of ffep, and light age toning.
- Scattered foxing and smudges throughout with heavy foxing to frontis, tissue guard and ffeps.
- Inside pages are lightly to moderately age toned.
- Occasional page exhibits flat closed tear from fore edge margin.
- Printing is clear and dark.
- Photo plates are printed on glossy paper.
- Book may exhibit additional minor signs of age or wear.
