Walter Colton (1797-1851) was a Chaplain for the United States Navy and a prolific writer. In addition to serving as the Alcalde of Monterey, CA he co-published California's first newspaper: The Californian. 366 pages + 11 pages from publisher. 5.25 x 7.5 inches.

Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD condition.
- Brown cloth boards feature elaborate blind-tooled filigree, with brilliant gilt illustration of sailing ship front and center.
- Binding is secure and strong.
- Minimal edgewear to the covers.
- Spine is sun-faded, with notably scuffed shoulders and softened spine ends.
- Printed endpapers present other books by publisher.
- Front pastedown has the number 1778 in ink, which is repeated on ffeps with some bleed to facing page. See photos.
- Small bookseller's stamp on ffep.
- Pastedowns and feps are notably foxed / stained.
- Moderate foxing and expected aging throughout text, more notable toward ends of book. See photos.
- Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
- Book may exhibit additional minor signs of age or wear.
