Emma Willard (1787-1870) was a female education activist, founder of the Troy Female Seminary, now known as the Emma Willard School.  In addition to teaching and advocating for the improvement of female education, she wrote numerous textbooks.  Willard's history and geography texts included women as well as men and emphasized the status of women as the primary determinant in whether a society could be described as civilized.
