Softback is overall in VERY GOOD condition.

  • Stiff cream wraps with glassine overlay are mostly clean, with red and black titles. 
  • Wraps show a few smudges, some edgewear.  Corners are sharp.  
  • Spine has a half-inch split at foot.  See photos. 
  • Binding is secure. 
  • End papers/ pastedowns show little sign of age or wear.
  • Facsimile copy of a letter dated October 5th, bound in as frontis, has tissue guards.  
  • Interior exhibits minimal signs of age and wear, shows some stray foxing, a couple of marks. 
  • Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
  • Text block edges have deckle fore and foot edges.
  • Portfolio style covers of silver paper over boards, with red ribbon ties, show rubbing, wear to shoulders, edgewear.

A Very Good copy of this collection of sixteen letters written by Henry James (1843-1916) to Walter Berry (1859-1927), in an edition from the Éditions Narcisse of The Black Sun Press in Paris.  Letters bear headings in red ink noting James' location when he wrote; a facsimile letter is bound in at the front of the volume.

The Black Sun Press, edited and founded by Harry and Caresse Crosby, was distinguished by the high quality of its editions and typographic excellence.  It became one of the most important small presses in Paris in the 1920s.

Limited edition of 100 copies, printed on Hollande Van Gelder Zonen paper, numbered.  This is copy #94. 

The case, silver paper over boards with ribbon ties, was made by the H.C. Capwell Co., a bindery in Oakland, CA.
