Updated and expanded from "The Art of Dialling" (1669), a book on the use of sun-dials and astrolabes in determining the position of vessels at sea. This collection of writings was considered the most important and most extensive treatise on the topic in the English language. It delves into the history, construction, calculation, demonstration and use of dials. Also included are some further instructions and commentary by other experts in the field. William Leybourn (1626–1716) was an English mathematician and land surveyor.
Includes 32 engraved plates (with 15 foldouts), as well as many tables.This edition includes 9 more plates than the 1st edition. Handsomely bound in full leather, it has an overall fine binding from the turn of the 18th century. The rounded spine sports five raised bands, with strong printing on a high quality heavy paper. 156 + 191 pages. 8 x 12 inches.
Second edition, corrected and expanded, was printed by: J. Matthews, for Awnsham and John Churchhill, London. 1700.
Hardback is overall in GOOD+ condition.
- Full leather bound, with gilt title on spine.
- Blind tooled covers on front and back are accented with black ink.
- Leather is a bit dry, with some cracking and scuffing.
- Edges are moderately to severely worn in places, with exposed board at corners and foot of spine.
- Binding is strong and solid.
- Front hinge is cracked 2" from head.
- Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
- Pastedowns and endpapers have small bits of writing from various owners, as well as some chipping and tears.
- Front pastedown features an elegant bookplate.
- Frontispiece is MISSING.
- Pages are gently age-toned, with scattered dark foxing, and light smudges.
- It has that "antique book" scent when opened.
