A very good plus signed copy, with very good dust jacket. This is the first American edition of the second novel written by Milan Kundera (1929-2023), Czech-French author of novels and stories.  Published simultaneously with a collection of his stories, Life is Elsewhere appeared first in a French edition, then the American.  There was no Czech edition, as Kundera's political satire was too sharp for the Communist regime.

An interesting association copy.  The inscription is to Burt Britton, 1979, and includes a cartoon self-portrait of Kundera.  Burt Britton (d. 2018) was a New York book seller and reader known for his collection of self-portraits of writers, artists, and musicians, which became a book published in 1976.

First edition.  Signed and inscribed on the half-title page.  Dust jacket illustration by Frank A. Fitzgerald.
