A Very Good copy of this scarce collection of illustrated fairy tales, an excellent example of collaboration between illustrator and publisher.  Eight sheets of heavy stock ("Untearable") between thin boards.  Full color illustrations to front and back covers, with text printed on reverse of covers.

The illustrations are the work of Mabel Lucie Attwell (1879-1964), a prolific and highly successful English artist and illustrator.  Remembered particularly for her drawings of children and fairies, from 1914 onwards Attwell developed her trademark style of sentimental rotund cuddly infants, which became ubiquitous across a wide range of markets: cards, calendars, crockery and dolls.

Attwell's drawings show to great advantage in Long-Ago Tales.  The publisher, with whom she worked on numerous gift books, was Raphael Tuck & Sons, a firm based in London with printing production in Germany.  Raphael Tuck's children's books were marked by their chromolithography, which is evident here in full-page illustrations marked by vivid, saturated colors.

Publisher's information appears on the rear cover.  No date is given, but "Publishers to their Majesties the King & Queen, & Her Majesty Queen Alexandra" indicates publication between 1910 and 1925.
