A very good first edition copy of an early novel by Provençal novelist Jean Giono (1895-1970). The narrator is old Amédée, an itinerant farm hand, the voice is rustic, and the story "heroic in its assault upon senseless conventions, free and candid as a romance, universal and sure in the understanding that compels sympathy." (jacket flap)
Translated from the French by Jacques Le Clercq (d. 1972), Professor at Queens College, known for his many English translations of French literature.
Jacket design by Margaret Ayer.
