The story of a young Black girl who moves from the South to New Jersey with her mother, while her grandmother remains in the South.  Lenski, a white author, wrote a series of books to introduce children to different regions of the United States, often focusing on impoverished or marginalized families.  She won the Newbery Medal for Strawberry Girl (1945).
