Samuel Gilman (1791-1858) was an American clergyman and author, born in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Following his studies at Harvard, he was ordained as pastor in the Unitarian Church at Charleston, South Carolina. Memoirs of a New England Village Choir is a fictionalized account of Gilman's experiences while at an academy in Atkinson, N.H., during his youth (ca. 1805). Gilman reflects on the challenges and joys of singing in a choir, as well as the importance of music in the community. The book also includes occasional reflections on life, faith, and the human condition, providing a glimpse into the culture and values of rural New England in the 19th century.
