Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD condition, with a GOOD DJ under Mylar

  • Black cloth covered boards show some smudges, edgewear.  Corners are bumped, scuffed.  See photos.
  • Spine has gilt text effaced and is stained, faded, with crushed ends.  See photos.
  • Binding is secure.  
  • Illustrated end papers/ pastedowns have some light wear, owner's marks.  
  • Interior is gently age-toned.  Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
  • Text block edges have a few marks.  
  • DJ is nicely preserved behind Mylar and is backed with archival paper.
  • DJ has wrap around band with images from the RKO film; DJ has some edgewear, chipped corners, chips at head edge and spine, bumping along foot edge, some staining to back.  See photos.

This is the First Photoplay Edition of the 1915 novel by W. Somerset Maugham (1874-1965), as issued by Garden City Publishing Company.  It features a yellow dust jacket with a wrap-around jacket band illustrated with scenes from the 1934 RKO film starring Leslie Howard and Bette Davis.  End papers display a patterned design and facsimile 'clippings' profiling the author and novel.  Condition is overall Very Good, with staining to the spine and darkened text block edges.
