A Novel Surprise Book of Living Pictures

introduction by F.E. Weatherly

London:  Ernest Nister, and New York:  E.P. Dutton & Company, [1895]

Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD condition, with a GOOD dust jacket.

  • Full color illustrated paper covers are mostly clean, with inked title and illustration.
  • Boards show some smudges to back cover, warping to lower corner with cracking of board, edgewear.  Corners are bumped.  See photos.
  • Green cloth spine is bright with softened ends.
  • Binding is secure.
  • Green floral end papers/ pastedowns show a little rippling.  See photos.
  • Illustrations are bright and clear.  Five pop-up scenes have all working parts.  See photos.
  • Interior is tanned, scattered foxing at margins of some pages.  Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
  • Illustrated DJ of tan paper with brown ink illustration and titles.  DJ shows edgewear and bumping at head and foot, with many closed tears, chipped corners and spine.  Signs of old tape repairs visible on underside.
  • PS2024.0313

16 sheets.  9.75 x 12.5 inches

A very good copy of this Victorian pop-up book of rhymes and stories published by Ernest Nister.  With contributions from Lucy L. Weedon, Edith Nesbit, and Clifton Bingham, plus F.E. Weatherly, who is credited with the Introduction.  Complete with very scarce dust jacket, this book has retained the fresh color and glossy quality of its illustrated paper covered boards, its only flaw being the ding to the lower opening corner where the cover shows some cracking.

Five large fold-out spreads show bright colors, all parts are intact.

With a gift inscription on the title page:  "Gladys Hayes from Nurse Ellen Dooley, Christmas 1897."

Published in London by Ernest Nister, and in New York by D.P. Dutton & Co.  Printed in Bavaria.
