Read's Characteristic National Dances;

Including a Series of Tales by Popular Authors

Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD condition.

  • Contemporary three-quarter brown morocco covers are mostly clean, with gilt ruling. 
  • Front hinge is tender.  Upper rear corner is scuffed, with exposed board.  See photos.  
  • Spine has raised bands, gilt text and ornament and is bright with chipped ends.
  • Binding is secure. 
  • Marble end papers/ pastedowns have bookplate at front pastedown, bookseller's sticker at back cover.  
  • Feps have notable foxing, bookseller sticker, a few pencil marks.  
  • Frontispiece is present, and has intact cover sheet.
  • Ex libris Sir David Salomons Bart.
  • Illustrations are bright and clear, with foxing to page edges, have foxed cover sheets.
  • Interior is gently age-toned, exhibits moderate foxing. 
  • Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
  • Text block edges have All Edges Gilt.

A very scarce collection of hand coloured plates depicting National Dances & Costumes, first edition, 1853.  Bound in contemporary brown morocco with gilt ruling and spine decoration.  Internally, additional engraved title page with hand coloured vignette, 12 plates with hand coloured steel engravings.  General foxing to the plates, cover sheets, and text block; heavy foxing to the feps. 

The Figures are represented in their National Costumes, and an interesting Tale by a popular Author accompanies each Illustration.  Dances include: The Maypole; The Highland Fling; The Irish Jig; The Spanish Fandango; Mexican Jarabe Dance; Chinese Sun & Moon Dance; The Hindostanee Shawl Dance and much more.

Bookplate at front pastedown connects this volume to the library of Sir David Salomons Bart. (1797-1873) at Broomhill, his estate near Tunbridge Wells.  Sir David, 1st Baronet, was a banker, politician, and leading figure in the struggle for Jewish emancipation in 19th c. England.  He was the first Jewish Sheriff of the City of London and subsequently the first Jewish Lord Mayor of London.
