60 pages. 6 x 9 inches

A very good copy, with dust jacket, of this first edition biographical study of the African American painter Robert S. Duncanson (1821-1872).  Born in New York state, of mixed parentage, Duncanson lived and worked in Canada and Ohio before taking up painting full-time.  Travels to Europe influenced his painting, as did the landscape painters of the Hudson River School.  He painted portraits and also murals, most notably the Taft murals in Cincinnati.

This work is part of the Sigma Pi Phi Series, which presents research on noteworthy black people of notable achievements.  The author, James Dallas Parks (1907-1983), was both an accomplished artist who exhibited widely and an art historian.  In his work he emphasized the contributions of Black artists, as in his biography of Duncanson.

First edition.  The Associated Publishers is a Division of the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History, Inc.  Printed and produced in Washington, D.C.
