This series of juvenile books was published by Rufus Merrill as well as Merriam and Merrill. The earliest volumes were published in 1848, and the latest by Merriam and Merrill were printed in 1856. Much of the same material was apparently used in various editions. The body of this book pertains to the 1850 Stories About the Whales (Rufus Merrill), with the wraps pertaining to the Merrill's Toys series. A second series, The "Museum of Natural History" appears to have the same titles with the same formats. Instead of stating "Merrill's Toys" at the top of the page, these books note Museum of Natural History. These titles were published between 1850 and 1854.
The name Albert E. Wilder appears in faint pencil on the title page. Geography and publication date make possible, but by no means certain, a connection to Albert E. Wilder (1846-1927) of Cheshire county, New Hampshire.
Title page states publication date 1850. Wraps read 1853.
