Indeed, this "Dictionary of Practical Knowledge" contains all the knowledge that a manufacturer could need in two volumes of closely printed text.  Arranged alphabetically by matter, with an index at the back of Volume 2, these books combine the thirst for practical knowledge that was part of the Industrial Revolution with pride in American independence -- "original improvements" are made to the "European Systems" referenced, and all the material is adapted to use by manufacturers working in the United States.  It includes paper making information, including the principal methods for the manufacture of paper for books and loose letters, that was later reprinted in a limited edition in the 20th century.

James Cutbush (1788-1823) taught chemistry, served in the U.S. Army, then became the medical officer at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.  In 1814 Cutbush was elected to membership in the American Philosophical Society.
