A generally very good copy, sans dust jacket, of the first printing of this novel of Hollywood dreams and disaffection by Nathanael West (1903-1940).  An understated edition from Random House, typical of the period.  Stylistically interesting are the chapter first pages, characterized by type font that diminishes in size from line to line.

West's novel was adapted to a screenplay for the 1975 film of the same title.  Directed by John Schlesinger and starring Donald Sutherland, The Day of the Locust conveys the alienation and desperation of a disparate group of people whose dreams of success do not come true.  It garnered scholarly attention for its nightmarish depiction and acerbic commentary of the Hollywood film industry.

First printing, as per the copyright page.  Manufactured by H. Wolff, New York.
