A handsome volume containing the texts of four addresses given between 1881 and 1891 by Henry Irving (1838-1905), English stage actor and theater manager. Irving, a prominent actor of the Victorian era, was the first actor to be knighted in England. These addresses, on the subjects of "The Stage As It Is," "The Art of Acting," and "Four Great Actors," were given at the Philosophical Institution in Edinburgh and at Harvard and Oxford Universities.
Heavy white paper, with generous margins. Much of the text block retains its uncut head edges.
The frontispiece is by James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903), a portrait of Irving entitled "Arrangement in Black, No. 3: Sir Henry Irving as Philip II of Spain." A contemporary of Irving, Whistler lived and painted in London at the height of Irving's acting career.
Edition limited to 300 copies, of which this is #242. Signed by the author on the verso of the title page.
