A very good copy, in the publisher's brown cloth covers with baseball themed illustration and title ornament, of this story for young readers by Noah Brooks (1830-1903). Third or later printing of the 1880 trade edition, with illustrated plate "The Ghostly Visitor" at the frontis.
Brooks, born in Castine, Maine, was a journalist, author and editor, and friend of Abraham Lincoln. He wrote a series of stories for young readers that touched on themes including immigration and class. He wrote some of the earliest fictional accounts of baseball; the Fairport Nine are a baseball team who play their rivals the White Bears for the pennant.
