Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD condition.

  • Dark green cloth covers with paste-on title illustration. 
  • Boards show some exposure, staining at foot, smudges and a scuff to title, edgewear.  Corners are a little worn.  See photos. 
  • Spine has gilt text dimmed with softened ends.
  • Binding is secure, some signs of looseness at foot of front cover. 
  • Pastedowns and feps have some wear, owner's marks.  
  • Frontispiece, a color illustration, is present. 
  • Illustrations are bright and clear, with marginal age-toning, some smudges to margins.  See photos.  
  • Interior is gently age-toned, exhibits some marginal toning, some smudges, folded corners to last pages.  See photos.
  • Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
  • Text block edges have a few marks.

A very good copy, no dust jacket, of the First U.S. Edition (preceding the UK edition).  Some smudging and a small scuff to the pictorial laid-on title.  Illustrated by Potter with 6 color plates and 20 full page and 42 smaller black-and-white drawings.

When Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) finished her Peter Rabbit series, it was her intention to stop writing.  It was only with the persuasion of her American publisher, Alexander McKay, that she agreed to write this book, intended for the American market.
