A Very Good Plus copy of the Cambridge University Press Library Edition of this classic work.  Reprint from 1970 of the 1949 First Edition, complete and without amendment.  With the original dust jacket, weathered from its original blue.

Redcliffe Salaman (1874-1955) was a British physician and biologist who, with this work, pioneered the history of nutrients as a new literary genre. (Wiki)  This  remarkable book is the culmination of a life-long study of every aspect of the potato, from its botanical genus Solanum and its spread throughout the world to the influence it has exerted on the social structure and economy of different peoples at different times.  The early significance of the potato among the peoples of Latin America is discussed, but the central portion of the book is concerned with the European, particularly the Irish evidence.  Elegantly written, with numerous vivid anecdotes, Salaman's History has long enjoyed the status of a classic.

Ex Libris Michael L. Hoffman 1973, per the Audubon Naturalist Society bookplate at the front fep.

Cambridge University Press Library Edition, Reprint of the 1949 First Edition.
