Hardback set is overall in VERY GOOD condition.

• Contemporary polished calf covers have gilt on edges and spine. 
• Boards show some age, wear, rubbing, stains.  Corners are bumped and scuffed; V.4 has exposed board.  See photos.  
• Spines have raised bands, tooling with gilt, morocco labels in red and green with gilt text.  Some wear but clear and readable.  Ends are scuffed.  See photos.  
• Bindings are secure, with some signs of cracking at shoulders.  See photos. 
• Pastedowns and feps are toned, have some staining, bookseller stickers. 
• Owner's stamps on the title page, recto and verso.  See photos.  
• Interiors are age-toned, with some text block shadowing. 
• Text block edges have a few marks at head.

A very good set of the classic story by Henry Fielding (1707-1754).  Early edition, published by Millar, the work's original publisher.  In four volumes, bound in contemporary polished calf ornamented with gilt.  Tom Jones is not only generally regarded as Fielding's greatest work, but is one of the first and most influential English novels.  Although a great success, going through four printings in its first year alone, the book drew criticism from many for the hero's high-spirited and varied sexual escapades.
