A very good first edition copy, in the original russet publisher's cloth covers with decorations in black, gold, and blind tooling.  With illustrations in the text, engraved frontis, and three foldout maps.  The large map is a copy of the John Smith 1614 Map of New England.  Some cocking to the spine, and chipping to the spine ends.

The Isles of Shoals, off the coast of New Hampshire and Maine, were settled by European colonists in the 17th century.  They were popular summering spots, and the largest of the islands, Appledore Island, was very popular with artists and writers late in the 19th century when the poet Celia Thaxter lived there.  John Scribner Jenness (1827-1979), the author of this history of the islands, was from Rye, New Hampshire.

This copy is inscribed "Elizabeth B. Bates, Appledore, Aug. 15, 1873."
