• Cobalt blue covers with beveled edges have gilt illustration and title, ruled border.  
• Boards show some darkening at edges, scuffing, edgewear.  Corners are bumped, frayed, with exposed board.  See photos. 
• Spine has gilt text and is scuffed and darkened with crushed ends.  See photos.  
• Binding is secure, with one gathering jarred.  See photos. 
• Pastedowns of brown paper have bookplate at front cover, owner's marks in pencil, bookseller sticker.  Inner feps have some light foxing.   
• Frontispiece is present and has intact tissue guard.
• Illustrations are bright and clear, full-page plates have lightly foxed tissue guards.
• Interior is gently age-toned, exhibits scattered foxing, some smudges.  
• Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
• Text block edges are foxed.

A very good copy of the first US edition of this book, originally published in London in 1873.  Publisher's decorated bright blue cloth stamped in gilt.  With three maps and plans, thirty-four full-page plates protected by tissue guards, and additional wood cut illustrations in the text. 

The outcome of a three-year journey around the world, dedicated to the "study of Man and Nature in the various lands of southern and eastern Asia," this volume is a personal narrative of travels in Burma, Cambodia, Siam and Cochin China between 1871 and 1872.
