First American edition.  New York:  Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1958  

Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD condition, with a GOOD DJ under Mylar.

  • Orange paper covers have illustration and facsimile signature. 
  • Boards show some smudges, rubbing, wear at shoulders, edgewear.  Corners are bumped, worn, with exposed board.  See photos.
  • Spine has black text and is a little faded, with bumped, crushed ends.
  • Binding is secure. 
  • Pastedowns and feps are gently toned. 
  • Illustrations are bright and clear.  
  • Interior is gently age-toned, wear to upper corners has been expertly, imperceptibly repaired.  See photos.  
  • Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
  • Text block edges have some foxing to head edge. 
  • DJ is nicely preserved behind Mylar and is backed with archival paper.
  • Close examination of DJ reveals edgewear, bumps, chipping, tiny closed tears, repair to spine head.  See photos.

Very good copy of this essential volume of Matisse's last works, supervised by the artist before his death.  Originally appeared in France as double issue 35/36 of VERVE.  Volume shows some wear to the lithographed paper boards at spine shoulders, with a bright interior.  Expert repairs made to wear at tips of upper corners.  Dust jacket is present, with some wear and repair made at spine end.  

Cover for the volume designed by Matisse specially for the purpose.  Color lithography by Mourlot Frères; heliogravure in black and white, and the typography, is by Master Printers Draeger Frères.

This American edition produced by Harcourt, Brace and Company.  Printing completed July 28, 1958.  Printed in France.
