Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD condition.
- Mid blue cloth covers half bound in navy leather with gilt tooling.
- Boards show some warping, edgewear. Corners are a little scuffed. See photos.
- Spine has gilt text and ornament and is bright with bumped ends.
- Binding is strong.
- Marble end papers/ pastedowns show little to no sign of age or wear.
- Gift inscription on inner fep.
- Frontispiece is present and has intact tissue guard.
- Illustrations are bright and clear.
- Interior is gently age-toned. Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
- Text block edges are marbled, have a little shelf wear at foot edge.

A handsome copy, Very Good Plus bound in navy half leather. This, the second part of Benson J. Lossing's series of pictorial histories, covers the War of 1812. With a color "illuminated" frontispiece, and illustrated throughout with "several hundred engravings on wood by Lossing and Barrett, chiefly from original sketches by the author."
Benson John Lossing (1813-1891), the author of over forty books, was a charter trustee of Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY from 1861 until his death. Lossing was a Dutchess County, NY native and became a prominent engraver, illustrator, and historian. He was a part owner and editor of the Poughkeepsie Telegraph, then moved to NYC where he became editor and illustrator for J.S. Rothchild's weekly Family Magazine.
Inscribed on the front end paper, "Please accept with kind regards from Henry S. Ranken, Troy, Oct. 15, 1869." Henry Stearns Ranken (b. 1836), born at Albia near Troy, was a businessman with the Ranken Manufacturing Company of Cohoes, NY.
The modern binding is by W.B. Williams, of Stone Mountain, Georgia, as per the binder's label inside the back cover.
