Volume II of the FIRST OCTAVO EDITION of Audubon's final great work, with the plates in fresh colors.  Contemporary fine binding, richly tooled leather.  Binding has been recased, with the spine flap relaid in place.  Interior is unmarked, text block is uniformly tanned.  Hand-colored stone lithographs by William E. Hitchcock, printed and colored in the Philadelphia shop of J.T. Bowen.

The work is the famed collaboration between John James Audubon (1785-1851) and his sons, John Woodhouse Audubon and Victor Gifford Audubon, and the Lutheran minister John Bachman.  They traveled through much newly explored territory of the United States, drawing and painting many species that are scarce, endangered, or extinct, today.  Beautiful hand-colored plates of hares, squirrels, buffalo, wolves, deer, grizzly bears, etc.

The octavo edition was first issued in parts between 1849 and 1854; V.G. Audubon was publisher.  Publication of Volume II was 1851, as per both the title and copyright pages.
