Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD condition.

  • Tan buckram covers have red and black inked titles with gilt decoration.   
  • Boards show some wear, smudges, edgewear.  Corners are bumped, scuffed.
  • Spine has red and black text dimmed and is darkened, with crushed, frayed ends.
  • Binding is secure. 
  • Pastedowns and feps of brown paper have some a few marks, a small chip.  See photos. 
  • Ex libris book features an owner's bookplate on front pastedown.
  • Interior is gently age-toned, exhibits a few smudges, some marginal staining as at page 225.  See photos.
  • Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
  • Text block edges have untrimmed fore and foot edges, yellow along head.

Early printing of Stephen Crane's Civil War classic, with 1896 publication date, 1895 Publisher's copyright.  Very like the first issue, with the same style tan buckram covers and two color title.  Broken type on page 225, advertisements for other titles from the publisher at the rear.  

PROVENANCE:  Bookplate on front pastedown reads "Herbert Wadsworth Ashantee Avon New York".  From the collection of Herbert Wadsworth (1857-1927), whose home Ashantee was in Avon, Livingston County, New York.
