The FIRST AND ONLY EDITION of this illustrated work on different dog breeds and their use in sports, by William Taplin. The third published English dog book, perennially admired for the excellence of its illustrations. Volume 1 published 1803, Volume 2 published 1804. Volume 1 is illustrated with a frontispiece, engraved title, and twelve full-page engraved plates by John Scott after John Michael Rysbrack & Philip Reinagle. Volume 2 is illustrated with a frontispiece, engraved title, and eleven plates. Also contains wood-engraved text vignettes by Thomas Bewick, a pioneer in the medium. Condition is Good on account of wear to the boards and partly disbound state. Interior has scattered staining and plates are foxed, but text block is overall quite bright.
The "series of engravings of every distinct breed, from original paintings, taken from life" is the centerpiece of the work. The title page goes on, however, to note that the plates are "interspersed with beautiful Vignettes, engraved on Wood." All these illustrations are accompanied by "a comprehensive, historical and systematic description of the different species; with a review of the various diseases to which they are subject, and the most approved and efficacious modes of treatment and cure. To which is added, a scientific disquisition upon the Distemper, Canine Madness, and the Hydrophobia." Authorship is attributed to A Veteran Sportsman (William Taplin).
Inside the front cover of each volume is a bookplate with the name Horace Seymour and family crest with the motto "Foy Pour Devoir" -- Faith for Duty.
