This attractive two-volume set presents lesser-known tales from the Arthurian cycle of romances. Tan cloth over thin boards with stylized illustration in colored inks with gilt ornament. Chapter titles are printed in stylized font and illustrated with woodcuts.
The text is a medieval German poem, ca. 1210, by Gottfried Von Strassburg, rendered in English prose by Jessie L. Weston (1850-1928). Weston was an English Medievalist and folklorist known for her work on the Arthurian cycle. The designs for the book are by Caroline Watts (1868-1919), an English painter, whose work appears in several books by Weston.
As were other books by Weston and Watts, The Story of Tristan and Iseult presented here was published by Alfred Nutt at the firm of David Nutt, a London book publisher and seller. The series was Arthurian Romances Unrepresented in Malory's "Morte d'Arthur;" this title was No. 2.
Inscribed on the front pastedown "Elizabeth Dodge." Not certain, but given the date it is possible that this Elizabeth Dodge was Elizabeth Dodge Huntington Clarke (1884-1976), born in Riverdale NY, a longtime resident of Istanbul with her first husband, and active supporter of the Y.W.C.A.
Third impression, 1907.
