Softback boxed set in is overall in VERY GOOD condition.

• Pale yellow paper wraps are mostly clean, with illustrated covers and printed advertisements on reverse.  
• Wraps show some wear, dirt, smudges, signs of handling.  Corners are worn, with some bending and closed tears. 
• Bindings are secure.
• Owner's mark top right corner of Number 13.  See photographs for details.  
• The Virginians Advertiser is present in each part, as are nearly all, if not all, of the other inserted ads.  Some on colored paper.
• Engraved title pages for Volume 1 and Volume 2 are at rear of parts 12 and 24.
• 46 etched plates after drawings by Thackeray.  Lists of illustrations appear at end of parts 12 and 24.
• With "actresses" on page 207.
• Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks. 
• Issues housed in hinged box, green cloth over boards.  Gilt title on spine side.  Box shows age, fabric is torn at lid hinge.

The Virginians, by William Makepeace Thackeray, first edition in the original twenty-four parts.  Published between 1857-1859.  Original yellow wrappers, illustrations on steel and wood by the author.  Issues include The Virginians Advertiser insert, plus many other advertisements. 

Number 13 is inscribed Horace M. Evans, 6th European Reg. at top right corner of cover.  Sir Horace Moule Evans (1841-1923) was an Indian Army Officer.  In 1859, already serving in Her Majesty's Army, he was promoted to Lieutenant in the 104th Foot from the 6th Bengal European Regiment.
