Very scarce original 1740 publication handsomely bound in full leather of this work by German Lutheran theologian and philosopher Johann Franz Budde (1667-1729), aka Joannes Franciscus Buddeus.This first French edition was translated by Louis Philon, and includes the woodblock frontispiece of Ernest Auguste Duke of Saxe Weimar, along with the red & black title page. Opens with a Dedication (to subject of frontis) and Preface, 368 pages of text, followed by detailed index. 5.25" by 8".

Hardback is overall in GOOD+ condition.
- Leatherbound covers show moderate wear with light cracks and hole to the finish with moderate edgewear, including exposed board at corners.
- Front board is lightly warped.
- Shoulders are cracked, more obviously at front.
- Spine has five raised bands with gilt lettering and design, with some expected scuffing, wear and dirt.
- Spine ends are worn, with exposed headband at top.
- Binding is secure, with tight text block and delicate hinges.
- May have been professionally repaired at an earlier time, with feps less aged than textblock.
- Marble endpapers are scuffed and worn, yet still vibrant.
- Front pastedown bears an ex libris plate and sticker residue of earlier bookplate.
- Rear pastedown shows a small portion missing from the lower left corner.
- Ffeps have some pencil, toning and foxing. Back fly leaf has large corner chip, just over 1"x1". Please see photos.
- Frontispiece is gently toned with minimal foxing.
- Interior is gently age-toned, more at perimeters.
- Pages have scattered foxing and smudges, the occasional crease, and some overall warping.
- Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
- All edges red with some dirt and light marks.
- Book may exhibit additional minor signs of age or wear.
