One of the numerous volumes devoted to the topic of Napoleon's exile on island of St. Helena. While calling itself a memoir, this book is in fact an account of the years Napoleon spent on St. Helena by a Frenchman, Paul Fremeaux. Fremeaux found the memoirs of John Stokoe, an English naval surgeon who had been at St. Helena from 1817 to 1819, in the possession of a relative. According to Fremeaux's introduction, Stokoe's memoirs were wordy where they should have been succinct, and sparse where they should have been expansive. These perceived faults did not keep Fremeaux from making use of Stokoe's contemporary account of Napoleon in exile to write his own contribution to the partisan debate about how Bonaparte was treated by the British and what sort of captivity he endured in exile.
Further complicating questions of source, narrative, and allegiance is the fact that Fremeaux wrote his account in French. The English translation was by Edith S. Stokoe, great grand-niece of Dr. John Stokoe and holder of the momoir manuscript which is the basis for this book.
