Word Rain

(or A Discursive Introduction to the Intimate Philosophical Investigations of G,R,E,T,A, G,A,R,B,O, it says)

by Madeline Gins

First edition.  New York:  Grossman Publishers, 1969

Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD condition, with a GOOD DJ under Mylar.

  • Unbleached cloth covers have title in black ink.
  • Boards show some smudges, darkening at edges, edgewear.  Corners are sharp.  See photos.
  • Spine has black text and is darkened, with firm ends.
  • Binding is strong.
  • Illustrated end papers/ pastedowns are part of the book; rear fep exhibits a ripple at corner.  See photos.
  • Illustrations, black and white photography, are clear, integrated into the text.
  • Interior exhibits marginal toning.  Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
  • Text block edges have ink at head, have a few marks.
  • Pictorial DJ looks nice behind Mylar and is backed with archival paper.
  • Close examination of DJ reveals light edgewear including possible bumps, rubbing, and/or tiny closed tears, tiny chips at corners, staining at perimeter, darkened spine.  See photos.
  • PS2024.0627

Unpaginated. 6 x 8 inches

Very good copy of this scarce first edition.  Dust jacket, behind Mylar, is Good plus with staining at the edges.

This is the first published book, now regarded as a masterwork of experimental fiction, by American artist, architect, and philosopher Madeline Gins (1941-2014).  Photo illustrations intrude into the text, cross-outs and overstrikes are part of the story, the DJ flap synopsis is "crossed out" in what looks like red crayon.

First printing, as per the copyright page.  Book and jacket design by Samuel N. Antupit.  Drawings by Shusaku Arakawa.
