A very good copy of Volume V of the seven volume Haworth Edition of 'The Life and Works of Charlotte Brontë and Her Sisters.'  With an introduction by Mrs Humphry Ward and preface by Charlotte Brontë.   Eleven illustrations show views of locations in the novels.

The Brontë sisters, Charlotte (1816-1855), Emily (1818-1848) and Anne (1820-1849), were English writers of the 1840s and 1850s.  Their novels caused a sensation when they were first published; they subsequently entered the canon of great English literature.  The sisters grew up in Haworth, near Keighley in West Yorkshire, surviving their mother and two elder sisters into adulthood. Charlotte and Emily had written compulsively from early childhood; Charlotte's Jane Eyre, Emily's Wuthering Heights, and Anne's Agnes Grey were all released in 1847.  The novels attracted great critical attention and steadily became best-sellers, but the sisters' careers were shortened by ill-health.
